Catalyst: Quiz Review We will go over this together! 1. A quirp has 4 chromosomes. What is the total number of genetic recombinations? 2. What are chromosome maps used for? 3. The law of _________ ___________ does not apply to gene linkage. 4. Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a recessive genetic disorder. If both parents are carriers, hwat is the probability of this couple having a child with PKU? 5. How are recessive genetic disorders and dominant genetic disorders different?

Objectives To explain the importance of pedigrees To analyze pedigrees Literacy & numeracy: Constructing pedigree charts and converting written instructions into graphical form; note-taking

Pedigrees -Pedigrees are used to determine the inheritance of traits. -Inheritance means the passing of genes on from one generation to the next. -Pedigrees are family trees which show which individuals in the family get certain diseases.

Pedigrees illustrate inheritance VII. Pedigree Male Parents Siblings Female Pedigrees illustrate inheritance Affected male Known heterozygotes for recessive allele Affected female Mating Death

VII. Pedigrees Pedigrees illustrate inheritance Female Male 1 2 II 1 2 3 4 5 In a pedigree, a circle represents a female; a square represents a male. III 1 2 3 4 ? IV 1 2 3 4 5

Pedigrees A shaded circle/square means that individual expresses the trait being studied. An unfilled circle/square = does not show the trait

VII. Pedigrees Pedigrees illustrate inheritance A half-shaded circle or square represents a carrier, a heterozygous individual.

VII. Pedigrees Pedigrees illustrate inheritance A horizontal line connecting a circle and a square indicates that the individuals are parents, and a vertical line connects parents with their offspring. I 1 2 II 1 2 3 4 5 III 1 2 3 4 ? IV 1 2 3 4 5
