A hero is an iconic figure to those around them. In Sir Thomas Malory’s “The Sword in the Stone” and T.H. White’s “Arthur Becomes King”, both author depict King Arthur as a legendary hero, a hero that can be found within legends. (Introduction/Connection) The short story, “The Sword in the Stone” shows the happy family of Arthur with his adoptive father, Sir Ector, and his adoptive brother, Sir Kay. When the King of England passed away, Arthur and his adoptive family went to England for a tournament to determine who would be the next King of England. When Arthur pulled the mythical sword from the stone, and was supposed to be named King, the nobles did not believe that Arthur should inherit the throne, however, the commoners demanded Arthur become King of England. In “Arthur Becomes King”, T.H. White provided a very similar depiction of Arthur as a legendary hero, however, provided much more detail. When Arthur went to pull the sword from the stone, he struggled three times before he could get the sword out, and then when he did, he was very heartbroken to be of a higher title than his adoptive family. (Thesis) Both Sir Thomas Malory and T.H. White depict Arthur as a legendary hero in their own unique way.

(Topic) In the short story, “The Sword in the Stone”, Sir Thomas Malory depicts Arthur as a character who is ready to become King, accepting his role as a legendary hero. (Detail) The main difference in this story is that the other characters, like Sir Ector and Sir Kay, refer to Arthur by his name, therefore showing that he is equal to them. (Evidence) An example from the text that shows this equality among the family members is whenever it states, “Sir Ector, who had been living on an estate near London, rode to the tournament with Arthur and his own son, Sir Kay…” (Malory 756). (Commentary) By the narrator and the characters referring to Arthur by using his real name, shows that they respect Arthur as a family member, and eventually, as King of Britain.
