Schematic representation of hepatitis E virus (HEV) genotype 3 in developed countries. Schematic representation of hepatitis E virus (HEV) genotype 3 in developed countries. The vast majority of cases cause asymptomatic infection. Only a small minority of infections cause clinically apparent hepatitis. The blue/grey areas represent patients who are symptomatic but currently frequently unrecognised. This includes patients with a range of HEV-associated neurological syndromes.  Brendan N Mclean et al. Pract Neurol 2017;17:282-288 ©2017 by BMJ Publishing Group Ltd
