Day 2 Training - Technical Sept. 18, 2008 Bus Comparisons Process Networking (F)

Protocol Overviews Protocol Description Special Features Ideal Applications Digital communication on 4 to 20mA point to point wiring. Operating signal typically on 4 to 20mA Now available in wireless version for digital signal Point to point analog process controls in PID loop CAN based 4-wire (2 power; 2signal) network with up to 62 devices per segment. Length is speed dependent. Suitable for discrete or analog applications. Mainly used for motor controls(VFDs) or in factory automation with Rockwell/Allen Bradley PLCs Communication over RS485 (4000 ft/1200 meters and up to 32 devices) with separate power. Modbus+ used as an update for higher speed applications Used to connect remote I/O into legacy control systems. Also used with electric actuators Basic network supplying power and digital signal with up to 61 devices per segment. Originally designed as Profibus DP sub-Layer Very simple to install, commission and use. Use as sub layer to input discrete devices. May use with Modbus, Profibus DP, EtherNet and DeviceNet RS 485 version with up to 32 devices with on 4000 ft (length is speed dependent). PA version simiiar to FF. DP (RS485) capable of reading over 1000 input points in less than 1ms. Widely used in factory and process for both discrete and analog devices. Object oriented network up to 1900m long interconnecting 12 to 20 devices on a segment with power & signal. Build up a PID loop directly connecting function blocks. Process applications using PID loops and/or intrinsically safe hazard protection
