The War in the Pacific Despite their best efforts the Japanese did not destroy America’s submarines in Hawaii. This was key because in the first six months after Pearl Harbor the empire of Japan grew larger than Hitler’s in Germany

In the spring of 1942 the tide began to turn against the Japanese. In May 1942 the Americans and Australians were able to stop Japan from taking Australia.

The Battle of Midway was a major turning point. Midway was an Island northwest of Hawaii that Japan tried to seize. After beating the Japanese at Midway the Americans began taking land away from the Japanese piece by piece.

After Midway the U.S. and its allies took control but not without a cost. The battles for the islands of Iwo Jima and Okinawa resulted in over 13,000 American deaths. The Japanese death toll was even higher reaching 110,000 lives lost on the island of Okinawa alone.

The General in charge of the American war effort in the Pacific was Douglas MacArthur.
