Screencast-O-Matic: Screen Recording and Video Editing Presented by: Taylor Boardman

Session Objectives What you’ll learn today: Features and costs of Screencast-O-Matic. Introduction on how to create and edit videos. How Screencast-O-Matic can help you and your company. Session Objectives. What you’ll learn today, first, is the different features of Screencast-O-Matic, as well as the costs. I will also given a basic overview on how to create and edit the videos. Lastly, I’m hoping you’ll see how much this software can help you and your company.

Session Agenda Overview of Screencast-O-Matic Comparisons of similar software Demonstration of how to use the software To start, I’ll give an overview of Screencast-O-Matic. Next, I have a list of the different software I looked at, which will give you an idea of what they’re all capable of. Finally, I’ll give a demonstration of how to use the software.

Screencast-O-Matic Overview Cost varies per plan Video Recording Customizable camera/screen size Computer noises Draw & Zoom Cursor placement after pause Quickly fix mistakes Video Editing Cut out unnecessary footage Hide/Show Cursor Overlay Speed Add music Add narration Captions Numerous Upload/Save Options Let’s start with the important stuff: how much does Screencast-O-Matic cost? There is a free version of the software for individual use, as well as a Deluxe and Premier version for both individual and team plans. Additionally, within the team plans, you can choose how many computers will need to access the software during a month. This count does reset every month. I’ve included a break down of all of the plans, their features, as well as costs, on this handout. When recording videos, there are numerous ways to customize the video. You can select what you want to record, whether it’s the screen, webcam, or both. You can choose a time limit for the video. The screen size is customizable, you can choose whether to narrate or not, and you can include the computer audio, as well. Once you’ve selected your options up front, you can choose to Draw & Zoom while recording. Draw & Zoom allows you to add text, lines, boxes, arrows, etc. to the video while you record it and allows you to zoom in during the recording. This was a little confusing at first, but once I changed the keyboard shortcuts, this became much easier. Screencast will also place your cursor to its previous location when unpausing. Additionally, it will allow you to re-record segments of your video by truncating the recording and resuming where you selected. Once you’ve finished recording, there are numerous editing features that are very beneficial. The “cut” feature allows you to remove any slack in the recordings. The “hide” feature has come in handy for hiding the cursor when it’s not needed. While I haven’t had a lot of opportunities to use “copy”, “insert”, or “narrate”, I do use “overlay” often. While drawing and zooming during the recording process is nice and has its pros, I have started using “overlay” after the fact. In addition to adding text, boxes, and arrows, it also allows you to blur and highlight. I’ve also become very familiar with the speed function. It allows you to either speed up or slow down portions of the recording, a very helpful feature if you don’t allow yourself enough time for the captions to be read. Other awesome features include the captions you can either have it automatically pull in or can write yourself, and the music. All versions of the software come with music tracks that can be added, then faded in or out. Screencast-O-Matic allows you to save to your computer, your account on the website, or upload to Youtube, Vimeo, Google Drive, and/or Dropbox. Furthermore, you can create a custom link or use the premade link to send to others or post on your social media sites.

Software Comparisons A little back story. At my very first chapter meeting, I heard about an awesome software called ClickLearn. Then, again, at Summit 2018, I went to a session on the software. While ClickLearn is a very amazing product with many amazing features of its own, unfortunately it was the right fit for our company. Our parent company in Germany recommended Camtasia, but I wanted to make sure I looked at all of our options. So, I went to the NAVUG online forum in search of ideas. I found a post from 2016 about Training Video Creation by David Wiser. He specifically asked about ClickLearn and Camtasia, but was open to discuss others. I pulled all of the suggestions from that thread, as well as google, and created this table. ClickLearn is truly an amazing software, but just not the right fit for us, financially. There are a lot of elements that are handy, including automatic narrations, numerous formats created, and easy updating to newer Nav versions. Camtasia is much more customizable. As someone not overly familiar with video editing, this software was overwhelming. This software required much more participation than ClickLearn. Again, this was not a good fit for our company, however, it was more that we couldn’t afford to have a person dedicated only to video creation, as a small company. The features include timeline-style formatting, viewer tracking, and the ability to add quizzes to videos. CamStudio iss perfect for the price, but very difficult to figure out. PowerPoint Screen Recording is also very nice, price-wise. To use it, go to the Insert tab, and it’s under Screen Recording. It’s incredibly easy to use and does allow some customizing, such as adding captions and fading. WalkMe is not a good fit for us, as we have Nav2016 on prem, but looks like a very nice software for the right company. Versal is a bit of a mystery. While the website gives a lot of different features, it does not actually show it in use and does not have any videos I could find. It seemed like a nice software and full of features such as unlimited courses, learner progress reports, and multi-author creation, however it does not show the actual course creation. Pricing from 12/18/18-1/2/19

Screencast-O-Matic Demonstration Video will be added here. https://motaninc.screencasthost.com/channels/cqVFYM5EI#nav back Within the Screencast-O-Matic video editor, you will select Record. This will let you select your recording options, such as the screen size and webcam settings. Once you have your preferences set, you press the record button and you get a countdown. I did not use the Draw & Zoom feature, but selecting pen icon or using the keyboard shortcut can pull it up. You can find and customize the keyboard shortcut by preferences button within the recording options screen. When you’ve finished recording, there’s a keyboard shortcut to pause it or you can select the pause button at the bottom of the screen, then click Done. This will launch the recording in the video editor. Here you can edit the video, add captions and music, and upload or save it. I went ahead and edited this video with numerous different tools so you could see how it worked.
