The importance of reading Kids who read often and widely get better at it Reading exercises our brains and improves concentration Reading teaches children about the world around them Reading improves a child’s vocabulary … language skills improve the child’s ability to write Reading develops a child’s imagination

Our reading routine in Key Stage 2 Reading everyday for a minimum of thirty minutes Reading with teachers, teaching assistants and independently Encourage a love of reading – helping children to select appropriate books and class novels Discussing books that they have enjoyed Regular visits to the library

Why do we need a reading record? Log of what children are reading Encourages children to reflect on their reading Communication between home and school Progression between KS1 and KS2 Chance for children to record new language

Reading record questions To be located in the back of your reading record. How did the main character feel when … Can you predict what is going to happen next? Why did the writer use this adjective and not another? Can you think of a story with a similar theme? How are the beginning and end of the story similar? Does the book have a good title and why? What does the word ____ tell you about the character?

How can you help your child with reading?

Listen to your child reading and model reading to your child.

Whenever and wherever you can… cereal box at breakfast poster on the bus advert on the street newspaper at the weekend recipe at dinner bed time story

Try a reading trip.

Try new ways of reading.
