Ancient Israel CHW 3M

History Information about Israel comes from the Old Testament Abraham was the Patriarch of a nomadic tribe that arrived in Palestine around 1900 BCE God spoke to Abraham and told him to settle in Canaan

History Abraham’s grandson Jacob organized the Israelites into 12 tribes Egypt captured most of the Israelites between the 15th and 13th century BCE Moses (“drawn from”) led the people out of slavery in Egypt during the reign of Ramses II The tribes were bound by a covenant (agreement) to the god Yahweh

History What is the story of the 10 Commandments? God spoke to Moses at Mount Sinai (aka Mount Horeb) to explain why he saved the Israelites from Egypt God gave Moses two tablets of stone inscribed with the 10 Commandments Moses smashed the tablets in anger upon returning to from the mountain as the Israelites chose to worship idols of Egypt Chose the Israelites to be the chosen people and made into a holy nation of priests for God. the people of Israel had become impatient while waiting for Moses to return with a message from God. Moses had been gone for so long that the people gave up on him and begged Aaron (Moses' brother) to build them an altar so they could worship. Disobeyed God's new commands.

The Ten Commandments Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy god in vain. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Honour thy father and thy mother. Thou shalt not kill. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. Thou shalt not covet. What are the 10 Commandments? Can you name any?

History King Solomon was remembered for his wisdom and his writing of many books of the Old Testament Maintained peace through alliances Temple of Jerusalem built during his rule to house the Arc of the Covenant, which would hold the Torah Only part remaining is the western wall – now called the “Wailing Wall” After Solomon’s death, kingdom split in two (Israel and Judah) Who is King Solomon? – became ruler of Israel around 967 BCE What was the Torah? – Jewish written law (5 books of the Hebrew Bible, commonly known as “Old Testament”)

Recreated Temple of Jerusalem

The Western Wall (All that remains of Herod’s temple)

History Israel was conquered by the Assyrians in 722 BCE and people dispersed Israelites eventually returned but the Kingdom of Israel was over

Significance The kingdom was not great and powerful, however the spiritual side has had profound influences on Western culture Idea of the covenant with God is the basis of Jewish faith Yahweh is all powerful and all knowing He stands outside and looks in Sometimes jealous and harsh God of all How did Judaism influence western culture?

Significance Was a religion of the people Leaders were not kings Passionate prophets appeared in times of corruption to bring forgiveness to those who repented God would provide a Messiah to lead the people of Israel From 200 BCE forward, Jewish people believed a king would appear to restore power and glory to Israel

Continuation of Jewish History The Diaspora occurred in 70 CE, sending the Jewish people throughout Europe Since spread around the world Religions of Christianity and Islam have roots in the beliefs of the Ancient Israelites
