What does Mr. Rauschenbach want? Written Response: What does Mr. Rauschenbach want?

Read the question carefully! How did the lives of African Americans improve during Reconstruction? What does improve mean? Subject is African Americans HOW?

Topic or Introductory Statement How did the lives of African Americans improve during Reconstruction? The lives of African Americans improved in many ways during Reconstruction. After the Civil War the lives of African Americans improved dramatically due to changes in the United States during Reconstruction.

How? Facts: General & Specific African Americans were now free. Very General! African Americans were no longer slaves because slavery was outlawed. More specific – addresses slavery by name. The 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution outlawed slavery so African Americans would no longer be subject to the horrible effects of slavery. Specific – vocab. Term, names, explanation

Facts Term/Name/Fact Explain/Define 13th Amend End of slavery, freedom 14th Amend Equal rights, citizenship 15th Amend Right to vote Freedmen’s Bureau Food, clothes, education Howard University higher education Hiram Revels & Blanche Bruce Elected to public office, Senate Don’t stop now. There is more information you can include. Think about it. Do more than the minimum. I EXPECT MORE THAN THE MINIMUM, YOU SHOULD TOO!

Sample The lives of African Americans improved during Reconstruction because when the 13th Amendment was passed it abolished slavery so they were free. Next the 14th Amendment was passed which said if you are born in the U.S. you’re a citizen. Then the 15th Amendment was passed which gave all men the right to vote & there was also the Freedmen’s Bureau which helped freed African Americans and poor whites. It helped them find jobs & took care of them and provided assistance to them.

Ask Questions! Ask for help! If you do not know what a word means ask for help. You can not answer a question if you do not know what the question is asking! If I can not tell you the meaning I will say, “I can’t tell you that” or, “You should know that.” If you don’t know the meaning others may not as well – be the brave one and ask. “Old South”, re-emerge democracy checks and balances
