PSEO Program Facts PSEO is a state program for eligible sophomores, juniors and seniors. PSEO offers the opportunity to enroll in and attend college-level courses and apply earned credits towards high school graduation requirements and a college degree. Provides funding for tuition and books during the school year only. Duration of eligibility based on grade level Three years for sophomores Two years for juniors One year for seniors Summer classes are not funded by the state

PSEO Eligibility for Anoka Ramsey Community Colleges High School Juniors Must have 3.5 G.P.A or higher or be ranked in the upper 1/3 of their class or score at or above the 70th percentile on any nationally standardized norm-referenced test High School Seniors Must have 3.0 G.P.A. or higher or be ranked in the upper ½ of their class or score at or above the 50th percentile on any nationally standardized norm-referenced test

High School Sophomores Pass 8th grade MCA Reading (850 or higher) No online courses Only one 1000 level career/tech education course in 1st semester Remember that career/tech education courses do not transfer to a 4 year college! Need C or better to take 2nd semester courses

Which classes give honors credit? Not all college classes will be considered honors classes on your high school transcript. Consult the list of district-approved PSEO honors courses on the district website. This list is found under: Academics Grade Level and Course information High School PSEO “PSEO Approved and Denied Courses MASTER Updated 2016.05.09” If column 6 is marked, the class is honors If column 7 is marked, the class is NOT honors

Important Things for Parents to Know College vs. High School Important Things for Parents to Know FERPA (Family Educational Rights & Protection Act) - Students need to fill out a “Consent to Release Form” to allow parents access student information. Example: grades and classes enrolled in. Not all college professors take attendance, but some do. The classroom is managed by the professor. - The syllabus is the contract between the student and professor. - Each class can have a different tone – read the syllabus.

Potential Consideration Academic Warning: Students are placed on Academic Warning when they fail to meet ARCC’s Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy for one semester. Maintain 2.0 Cum. G.P.A. and Complete 67% of the classes they attempt, cumulatively. Withdrawing or failing a course is considered not completing a course. If students fail to meet the policy the following semester, students are placed on Academic Suspension. Students are unable to attend ARCC and may lose their eligibility to receive any financial aid once they’ve graduated from high school.

Setting Course Load 1 college credit = 1 hour in class per week 4 credits at the college = 1 credit at Anoka High School 1 hour in class = 2 hours homework per day outside of class Example: English 1121, 4 credits, 4 hours in class + 8 hours out = 12 hours per week Full-time = 12 to 16 credits per semester

AHS Regular Day Schedule Period 1 7:40-8:47 Period 2 8:54-10:01 Period 3 10:08-11:15 Period 4 11:22-1:06 (30-min lunch) Period 5 1:13-2:20 (Advisement affects Tuesday schedule and Tornado Time affects Wednesday schedule) Examples: Attending AHS for periods 1 – 2 means college class cannot start until 11:00 am. Attending AHS for periods 4 – 5 means college class must end by 11:00 am (earlier preferred - consider winter!)

Transferring Credits to the U of M Univ. of Minnesota’s MnCAP program MnCAP is a cooperative admissions program with Twin Cities metro area Comm. Colleges. Students that enroll into the program and meet the program guidelines are guaranteed admissions into select colleges at the university. See U of M website for more details. PSEO at the U of M The online application window opens February 1. Final postmark deadline is April 15, 2019. Students will be notified of admission decision by May 30. The U of M is selective in accepting PSEO students. The average unweighted G.P.A. of admitted student is 3.92 Students should apply online and print the “PSEO balance sheet.” Bring the balance sheet, transcript release form, PSEO state form to the counseling office. Admission application and forms can be found on the U of M website: http://cce.umn.edu/pseo For all other 4-year colleges, please contact the college directly.

U of M Campus Info. Sessions Consider attending an Information Session on campus. Sessions cover application procedures and key considerations for PSEO at the U of M next year. Dates, time, and room location can be found on the U of M PSEO website. PSEO at Technical Colleges Application process is similar to ARCC. Placement test is required after applying. College credit goes towards completion of a certified program. Technical college credit does not generally transfer to a 2- or 4-year college. Articulated credit can be obtained through STEP (Secondary Technical Education Program) in high school.

Registration steps, continued Complete a transcript release form in the Counseling Office. Parents need to sign the form for students under age 18. There is a $3 fee for transcripts to be sent to the college. Request to have your transcript mailed along with the 3-part state form to the college. Sign up online to take the Accuplacer placement test online for ARCC/AHTC or phone 763-433-1180. You may substitute ACT scores for the placement test if your ACT was taken within the last two years and meets the minimum required section scores: English: 18 or higher Math: 22 or higher

The Accuplacer testing schedule is available online at www.anokaramsey.edu/resources/testing-services Student must sign up for an appointment for the Accuplacer. Walk in testing is no longer accepted. You must have your Anoka-Ramsey student ID number or StarID to sign up. The Testing Center is located in Room SC 150.  Students must present a photo ID and a student college ID number at the time of testing. Student ID numbers may be obtained at the Records Office.  It’s best to apply to the college prior to testing.  Plan for 2-3 hours to complete the test. You will get your results immediately.

Registration steps, continued Schedule an appointment to see your counselor AFTER you take the placement test. Please bring your test results with you to the appointment. If you do not need to take a placement test due to your approved ACT score, please schedule an appointment with your counselor once accepted to the PSEO program. Your counselor will review the results with you and discuss which classes you will need to take to meet high school graduation requirements.

IMPORTANT!!! ARCC recommends applying by APRIL 15. If you apply after JUNE 1, your counselor will not be available to sign the state form and advise you in course selections to meet AHS graduation requirements.. Once accepted at ARCC, do an online Orientation and Registration Planning Session. This will include a tour, student ID info, advising & registration. ARCC will send instructions to you. These begin in late April and will continue into July and August. You’ll be able to register for classes at the college after you complete an orientation. It’s best to apply soon to get an early registration session.

Contact your Anoka counselor once you’ve registered for college classes. This may occur in late spring or over the summer. Please email your AHS counselor your college schedule. If we have questions we will contact you when we return to the office in August. Your Anoka High School schedule will not change until we receive your college schedule. To avoid truancy on your record, you must contact your AHS counselor after signing up for college classes.

What is a placement test? The Accuplacer is a placement test that assesses skill levels in: English composition Mathematics Reading Test results are used to determine the appropriate course placement and can be used to assess whether you qualify for the PSEO program. If test scores are low, classes will not be paid for and the student must take the class at Anoka High School.

Placement Test Information Students are not required to take the placement test(s) if they have: Recent ACT sub-scores of at least 22 in math, 18 in English. To use ACT score, an official ACT score report must be submitted to the Records and Registration Office at the college. Students request official copies from www.actstudent.org In some cases, an SAT or MCA score can be used for course placement. Consult with ARCC once accepted.
