Summer Math Curse 2018 By Caleb Lease

Problem 1 This summer, we made multiple trips to the beach and back. On one trip we left at 4:00 pm and stopped for dinner for ¾ of an hour. It is 180 miles from my house to the beach and our average travel speed was 60 mph. What time did we arrive at the beach for this trip? This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY

Problem 2 Over the Summer, my 2 brothers, my cousin, my dad, my 2 grandparents and I went to an amusement park in Pennsylvania. Each ticket costs $39.95. My grandmother had coupons for $5 off per ticket. How much money did my grandmother spend on tickets?

Problem 3 There were 76 days this Summer. I spent 54 days in Ocean City, and 3 days in Pennsylvania. What percentage of days was I away? What percentage of days was I home?

Answer key Problem 1 Problem 2 Problem 3 $244.65 25% home and 75% away First I did 4pm + ¾ of an hour (which is 45 minutes) and got 4:45pm. Then I took 180 miles and divided it by 60 mph and got 3 hours. I added 3 hours to 4:45pm and got 7:45pm as my final answer. 7:45 pm First I counted the total number of people that went to the amusement park (7). Then, I multiplied $39.95 x 7 and got $279.65. Then I multiplied the number of tickets (7) x $5.00 for the coupons. That totaled to $35.00. I then subtracted $35.00 from $279.65 and got $244.65 as my total cost. $244.65 First I counted the days I was in Ocean City (54). Then, I counted the days I was in Pennsylvania (3). Then, I added them together and got 57. Then I made a fraction of 57/76 for the total number of days I was away over the total number of days of summer. Then, I divided 57 by 76 and got the percentage of days I was away (75). Then, I subtracted that from 100 and got the answer for the percentage of days I was home. 25% home and 75% away
