Mental Mapping!

Oceans: Atlantic, Arctic, Indian, Pacific, Southern On the scrap paper provided, draw a mental map of the world. This map should NOT be “perfect,” it is just to see how you imagine the world. Next, label the continents and oceans. Continents: Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, South America Oceans: Atlantic, Arctic, Indian, Pacific, Southern 2

On your map, 1) Locate and label your “three Most Important Cities” in the world 2) On the back, list them and tell me why you think they’re important. NO MAPS YET! 3

Mental Mapping Where and what do you know the most about? What does your map tell you about how you see the world? Where and what do you know the most about? Where and what would you like to learn about? 5

Which are the top 5?

Mental Mapping Mental maps represent what we know about the locations and the characteristics of places at a variety of scales (local to global) from the layout of our homes to the distribution of oceans and continents on the surface of the Earth. Knowledge and experience influence the content of our mental maps. 7

Discussion How accurate were your mental maps? How did your personal perception of “important cities” compare to that of the class? What made these cities important? 8
