MITOSIS Interphase Period between nuclear divisions. DNA replicates (not visible). Chromosomes not visible – can only see thread of chromatin.
Prophase Centrioles visible at poles. Microtubules create spindle framework. Nucleolus disappears and nuclear membrane breaks down. Chromatin threads become tightly coiled and are seen as chromosomes (the X shape).
Metaphase Condensed chromosomes move to the middle. Centromere of each pair is attached to a spindle fibre.
Anaphase Sister chromatids separate and are dragged to opposite poles. Centromeres still attached to the spindle fibres.
Telophase Chromosomes decondense. Nuclear envelope reforms. Spindle fibres disappear.
