It’s a program run by Queensland State based on research that when babies and children get what they need it can have a lasting effect on their future. The program believes that 90% of a child’s brain development happens in the first 5 years. (MCEECDYA project)* The program encourages parents to share stories, rhymes, singing, talking and playing with their children from birth. The program gives parents advice, tips and recommends books for their children. http://first5forever.org.au/

It’s an English reading assessment program It’s an English reading assessment program. It measures the reading age for the reader by making 30 levels using fiction and non-fiction texts and distinguishes levels using colors on a chart. www.readingrockets.org/research/topic/about-reading

How we can do that in Saudi Arabia? We need to improve these elements in school libraries: Qualified Librarian Modern/suitable books Modern equipment Activities Programs

HOW TO START? 1- Convince the stakeholders: Different department leaders in the Ministry of Education to (to merge activity management with libraries and Learning Resources management in ministry of education). School Principal School librarian. 2- Understand the different requirements of primary school libraries and high school libraries. 3- Connect people with libraries starting from school library. 4- Implement a reading system like PM benchmark. 5- Educate families on their responsibilities to cooperate with schools.

Bring your pen List the elements of an Australian school library that you suggest to be replicated in Saudi school libraries Calculate all costs involved Write a plan to refurbish Saudi school libraries based on the 5 previously mentioned factors. The different elements should be implemented in the following order Activities, Programs, Books, Equipment and Librarians. - Illustrate the importance of having libraries in every neighborhood - Request the MOE implements the plan in each school and extends the school library times and open to the public.

The Plan Step Time ( 1 Term) Step 1 : focus on library activities - Hook*: - Library activities are important because they are cost effective and highly engaging for the students. - The activities will be related to the curriculum, books, STEM and important world days. - There will be games and puzzles that help develop higher order thinking skills - Recycling materials will play a big role in this step.

The Plan Step Time ( 1 Term ) Step 2 : focus on library programs - goals*: Library programs require time to develop and organize. The programs will mostly be related to developing speaking, reading, writing and listening skills and will include competitions. - Improving literacy by implementing a system like PM benchmark will be an important element.

The Plan Step Time (1 Term) Step 3 : focus on library books and knowledge*: - Sourcing and supplying the libraries with suitable and modern resources is critical. - Step 1 and 2 will help decide which kind of books will be needed in school libraries. - It will be important to survey students on their opinion about the kind of books they like to read. - Improving literacy by implementing a system like PM benchmark will be an important element.

The Plan Step Time ( Term 1) Step 4 : focus on library equipment and resources*: Libraries need good equipment to help students engage in the library and to help make using the library more convenient Recycled materials will help in some activities and programs - Once the first three steps are complete funding will be required in order to purchase the best equipment. ( start funding plan ) STEM equipment will be a priority -How to increase the available space in libraries will also be an important consideration at this point

The Plan Step Time ( Term 1) Step 5 : ( focus on Qualified Librarian) guide*: - After the libraries have been refurbished the Ministry of Education will require all librarians to be qualified. I expect the librarians will work 1 hour before school and 1 hour after school. - I expect the librarians will have STEM knowledge to help students grow their minds. - I expect the librarians will create good activities and programs.

Funding Plan Funding will be based on several factors such as: School budget. Joining fees. ( silver – gold – diamond ) Paid Activities and programs. Facilities – e.g. printing. (www.papercut.com) Sponsorships. Donations.

Some Ideas help

Activity Hour Australian schools have a long break time: Break one starts from 11:15 until 11:45 = 30 min Break two starts from 12:55 until 1:45 = 50 min If we merge activity hour in break time the students will find time to go to the library, play sports and do some activities.

Arabic MQ The Name of Program takes from MEQYAS ALQERAAH FOR ARABIC It is a plan to build an Arabic Reading program like PM Benchmark that’s can help Arabic speaker kids develop reading skills and encourage them to read. The program will help parents to know which book good for them kids ages.
