Maynard Jackson At the age of 35, Maynard Jackson became the first African-American mayor of a major southern city He served as mayor of Atlanta from 1973-1981 and again from 1990-1994

Maynard Jackson He was helpful in providing more contract work to black-owned businesses He expanded Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport He sought to add more African American police officers and promotions for African American officers

Maynard Jackson During the 1990s, he worked with other important figures to bring the Olympics to Atlanta He retired in 1994 due to health problems He died in 2003 and in his honor, the city of Atlanta renamed the airport Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International

Andrew Young

Andrew Young He was active in the Civil Rights Movement He started working for the SCLC where he successfully organized demonstrations and voter registration campaigns throughout the South He became a close associate with Martin Luther King, Jr. and was with him when he was assassinated

Andrew Young He was elected as Georgia’s first African-American Congressman in 1972 He was later appointed ambassador to the United Nations In 1981, he was elected mayor of Atlanta As mayor, he helped Atlanta continue to grow and gain national standing

Andrew Young He left office in 1989, but continued to work for Georgia’s economic development He served on the Olympic committee and has worked as a consultant for many international organizations

Contributions to the state’s growth and economy have also come from growing immigrant communities: Georgia’s foreign-born population increased, between 1990 and 2000, by an incredible 233%. Lesson Five (SS8H12e) – The student will evaluate the importance of new immigrant communities to the growth and economy of Georgia. Since the mid-1970s, Georgia has attracted a large number of refugees from Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. More recently, immigrants have arrived from Africa, Eastern Europe, the Middle East. SS8H12 – The student will evaluate the importance of significant social, economic, and political developments in Georgia since 1970.

Nearly ¼ to ½ of all carpet mill workers are Hispanic immigrants. Lesson Five (SS8H12e) – The student will evaluate the importance of new immigrant communities to the growth and economy of Georgia. Immigrants have had the largest impact on north Georgia, where the Hispanic population have moved to fill jobs in construction, poultry processing, and carpet manufacturing.
