Toddler Intellectual Development

Games Fit to toddler’s own interests

TOYS HELP TODDLERS… Explore their world Use imaginations Solve problems Release anxiety Set and reach goals Give affection Gain physical knowledge Use gross & fine motor

Toddlers are curious about everyone and everything Piaget Sensorimotor stage Birth to 2 years Thinking occurs 18 – 24 months Called “Little Scientists”

When you see toddlers pause in mid-action, they are probably thinking figure out mentally instead of testing physically Think in terms of actions (What is a ball? “To play with” “To roll”.)

Don’t think about consequences (To get a cookie on the kitchen table, a toddler may pull on the tablecloth until the cookie falls.)

Deferred Imitation The ability to recall someone’s behavior and later imitate it.

Thinking evident in hiding games Child knows the object still exists (object permanence) Thinks about where the object could be hidden

Begin to perceive differences in shape, size, color, and texture. Learn attributes of objects Requires comparison

Multiple-word sentences LANGUAGE SEQUENCE coo nouns Simple action verbs Descriptive words One-word sentences Two-word sentences Multiple-word sentences

Single Words one word sentences - 12 – 18 months Note how child says the word, what gestures are used, and what is happening to get the meaning

2 or More Words only the most necessary words can vary by several months

VOCABULARY GROWTH Fastest growth around 30 months

Spoken language develops at a faster rate between one and three years than at any other time in life.

Toddlers of chatty mothers knew more words than children of less talkative ones model language How many times a child hears a given word is key

Learning to Talk Depends on: Interest – more active are more interested in motor skills than talking Talking early doesn’t mean they are above average

Learning to talk depends on Gender – girls tend to excel in verbal skills Need – some children get what they want without saying anything Interesting environment –more to say about it
