GETTING READY TO GO TO CAMP SCIENCE CAMP GETTING READY TO GO TO CAMP

LOCATION AND WHEN LOCATION – JONES GULCH NEAR LA HONDA IN SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS. DEPART MONDAY, May 6th  RETURN FRIDAY, May 10th STUDENTS ATTENDING CAMP WILL RECEIVE A CAMP T-SHIRT TO BE WORN THE DAY OF DEPARTURE.

PARTICIPANTS 5TH GRADE WOODWARD STUDENTS MUSD HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AS COUNSELORS Mrs. DeMatteo & Mrs. Reeves as teacher chaperones Mr. Berchtold is staying back with students who aren’t attending camp

TRANSPORTATION STUDENTS RIDE BUS 3 TO A SEAT NO ELECTRONIC DEVICES ALLOWED ON BUS. BRING A SACK LUNCH FOR THE BUS RIDE AS STUDENTS STOP AT A PARK HALF WAY TO CAMP. NO GLASS CONTAINERS FOR DRINKS. RECOMMEND JUICE BOX OR WATER FOR BUS TRIP.

WHAT IS CAMP LIKE? STUDENTS LIVE IN CABINS WITH RESTROOMS DINING HALL AND MULTIPURPOSE LODGE CABINS HAVE BUNK BEDS, HEATERS, AND ELECTRICITY WE ENCOURAGE FAMILIES TO WRITE LETTERS TO THE CAMPERS. ADDRESS IS IN BOOKLET OR YOU CAN GIVE LETTERS TO TEACHERS BEFORE WE LEAVE.

WHAT DO STUDENTS STUDY ACADEMICALLY ORIENTED BASED ON GRADE LEVEL STANDARDS DEVELOP UNDERSTANDING OF NATURE, CULTURE, PEOPLE, IDEAS, AND FEELINGS ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT

WHAT IS THE DAY LIKE? STUDENTS CLEAN THEIR CABINS PRACTICE GOOD HYGIENE, PERSONAL NEATNESS WAKE-UP 7 A.M. LIGHTS OUT 9:30 P.M. ALL INSTRUCTION IS OUTDOORS

WHO’S IN CHARGE? PRINCIPAL - MR. BAHR NATURALISTS - YOUNG ADULTS THAT ARE DEGREED IN ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES. WOODWARD TEACHERS CABIN LEADERS - HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH COUNSELOR RECOMMENDATION - GOOD STANDING

HOW CAN PARENTS HELP? DO NOT ENCOURAGE CHILD TO CALL HOME DO NOT SEND EXPENSIVE OR NEW CLOTHING/SHOES DO NOT SEND VALUABLES LABEL EACH ARTICLE OF CLOTHING WITH CHILD’S NAME CAMPERS LIMITED TO ONE SUITCASE AND SLEEPING BAG/PILLOW

DISCIPLINE AT CAMP ALL SCHOOL RULES APPLY AT CAMP SERIOUS OFFENSES CAN RESULT IN IMMEDIATE TERMINATION OF CAMP EXPERIENCE - CABIN RAIDS, FIGHTS, DISRESPECTFUL BEHAVIOR, ENDANGERING SELF OR OTHERS, ETC. PARENTS WILL BE NOTIFIED AND RESPONSIBLE TO TRANSPORT STUDENT HOME

DISCIPLINE AT CAMP CONFERENCE EXPLAINING INFRACTION AND RULE BY CAMP AUTHORITIES REMOVAL FROM CAMP ACTIVITY SUCH AS SIT OUT A HIKE CONTINUED PROBLEMS - PARENT CONTACTED - SEND HOME WARNING 3RD STRIKE - SENT HOME - PARENTS MUST COME AND TAKE STUDENT HOME

MEDICAL NEEDS AT CAMP ALL MEDICATIONS-PRESCRIPTION AND NON-PRESCRIPTION- MUST BE LISTED ON THE MEDICAL FORMS AND APPROVED BY YOUR PHYSICIAN. THIS INCLUDES VITAMINS, ASPIRIN, COUGH DROPS, COLD REMEDIES, ETC. (yellow form) ALL ADMINISTRATION DIRECTIONS NEED WRITTEN OUT ON MEDICAL FORMS. PRESCRIPTION MEDS MUST BE IN ORIGINAL CONTAINERS WITH DIRECTIONS

SELF ADMINISTERED MEDS THE PINK FORM MUST BE COMPLETED AND SIGNED BY YOUR PHYSICIAN IF A CHILD NEEDS TO HAVE AN INHALER, EPI-PEN, OR DIABETIC MEDICATION.

PACKING MEDICATIONS PUT ALL MEDICATIONS IN A ZIPLOC BAG WITH YOUR CHILD’S NAME WRITTEN ON THE OUTSIDE GIVE MEDICATIONS TO THE TEACHER AS STUDENTS PREPARE TO DEPART ON BUS NOTIFY TEACHER IF STUDENT NEEDS ACCESS TO MEDS ON BUS TRIP

STUDENTS NOT ATTENDING CAMP STUDENTS MUST REPORT TO SCHOOL DURING THE WEEK OF CAMP THEY WILL BE PLACED WITH MR. Berchtold FOR THE WEEK. THEY WILL BE DOING THE ‘MUSCRAT’ CURRICULUM.
