Transitive & Intransitive More Verbs… Transitive & Intransitive What’s the difference?

Transitive Verbs Expresses action toward a noun. The action passes from the doer (subject) to the receiver The word that receives the action of a transitive verb is called a direct object. EXAMPLE: The monkey entertained Zach. *Think…entertained what/who?...Zach, so Zach is the direct object.

Intransitive Verbs Tells something about the subject. There is no one or nothing receiving the action. EXAMPLE: Mr. Doodle crowed. *There is nothing receiving the action crowed, so crowed is INTRANSITIVE. Hint: If the sentence is intransitive, there is no direct object.

Trans = DO Intrans = No DO Remember This!! If a sentence is Transitive it has a Direct Object and maybe an Indirect Object. If a sentence is Intransitive, it does NOT have a Direct Object. HINT Trans = DO Intrans = No DO

Let's Review... What is a Transitive Verb? Answer: It expresses an action directed at another person, place, or thing. It takes a DO. What is an Intransitive Verb? Answer: It tells something about the subject. It does NOT take a DO. What is a Direct Object? Answer: It tells who or what receives the action. What is an Indirect Object? Answer: It tells to whom the action is done.
