Dan Patrick “En Fuego”

Rise to Prominence Patrick became a national media personality when he landed a job as an ESPN sportscenter anchor in 1989. He remained at this job for 18 years.

Biography (with Education) Played basketball in high school and was an Ohio all-state selection his senior year. Won a Sports Emmy Award in 1998 for Outstanding Sports Personality, Studio Host. Was named the National Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association in 2000.  Was a possible replacement for Bob Barker to host The Price Is Right, but declined the offer to audition for the position. Left ESPN in August 2007, after working for the network for 18 years. Began hosting the syndicated radio show The Dan Patrick Show in October 2007; starting in 2010, it was simulcast on various sports networks. Became a senior writer with Sports Illustrated in 2007. Named to NBC's coverage team for the 2012 Olympics in London. College: University of Dayton, Dayton, OH (BA in Broadcasting, 1979) Source http://www.tvguide.com/celebrities/dan-patrick/bio/213784

Defining Quotes Stylistically, Patrick is known for his humor … “I was not a kid you worried about. I’d go out and shoot hoops by myself at eleven o’clock. Loved the solitude. Loved that make-yourself-better feeling. If you missed, nobody to blame but yourself. Car window down, stereo on in the Oldsmobile, just shooting hoops. On my court, at eleven at night, I was The Man. Come get some.”

… And his ability to blend sports with insights on life. As a father, you think that your son is you. In my case, that he was gonna be an athlete. My son is six foot five, but all along my wife kept saying, “He’s not wired the way you are.” I wanted him to experience what I’d gotten from sports, where you’re on a team and you’re helping, and those moments that define you when you win and you lose. When we’d go out and shoot, I’d tell him I was always gonna be better than him no matter how old I got. You know, try to goad him on. But he didn’t get the whole Sharks and Jets thing. He’d say, “Okay.” He taught me to not put him in a box. He’s an Eagle Scout. He just had different curiosities and fascinations that I never did. I realized that I had this myopic view of the world! He’s the smart one! He sees all of it! All the time I was thinking: He doesn’t get what it’s like to be me. And he was saying, “You don’t get what it’s like to be me!” Source: Esquire Magazine. Male sports fan between the ages of 25 and 65. Target Audience

Influence Patrick is one of America’s most well-known sportscasters. His ability to effectively do television, radio, and print media make him incredibly versatile, available, and influential to the way sports are conveyed to the public. Every television sportscaster in America who attempts humor or wit in their narration owes a debt to Patrick, who has been “en fuego” for 25 years now.
