Creating and Choreographing English – Dance Student will be able to construct a dance that represents the short story according to the plot development in order to apply the elements of time, space and energy to the choreographic process Megan Dooley: 1st Bevalaqua 3 mazza….6 Megan.dooley4@gmail.com

The Plot Psychological Aspects Internal Conflict External Conflict Exposition Rising action Climax Falling action Resolution denouement Psychological Aspects Internal Conflict External Conflict Interpretation of Events

Exposition Term used to describe events at the beginning of a story that set the scene and introduce background, characters, and conflict. The exposition is the starting point of a narrative and can be thought of as the status quo (a.k.a the existing state of affairs), before the complications of the plot begin.

Rising Action This part of the story begins to develop the conflict(s). A building of interest or suspense occurs.

Climax This is the turning point of the story. Usually the main character comes face to face with a conflict. The main character will change in some way.

Falling Action All loose ends of the plot are tied up. The conflict(s) and climax are taken care of.

Resolution and denouement The story comes to a reasonable ending. The final part of a play, movie, or narrative in which the strands of the plot are drawn together and matters are explained or resolved.

Today’s Choreographic Device Develop movement that expressed the exposition of your story. ONLY USE HUMAN GESTURES AS YOU MOVEMENT!!!!! Create just the simple movement that an actor would add to his or her character.

Choreographic Device Abstracting a Gesture Take the base movement phrase and break apart each gesture and make the movement grow and change by extending the movement into the space at a greater value.

Choreographic Device Vary the Energy Take the series of movement and add different levels of force and effort to represent the emotions being constructed in the story. Weight Stillness Soft Light Force Resistance Effort Tension

Part 4: Vary the Time Tempo: Dance contrasting tempos using two or more movements or with different parts of the body. Rhythm: Dance with contrasting rhythms using two or more rhythms with different parts of the body.

Elements of Dance Vary the Space Pathways: Dance spatial pathways and designs with accuracy, awareness of other dancers, and in clear spatial relationships to others. Levels: Dance with purpose and intent on all levels (including lifts when appropriate) with an awareness of one’s relationship to other dancers and spatial design.

Gesture Becomes Dance Embellishment 1. an ornament or decoration. 2. a fictitious addition, as to a factual statement. 3. Music.a.ornament (def. 8).b.auxiliary tone. 4. the act of embellishing. 5. state of being embellished.
