Communication in Science **Precise communication is crucial for scientists to share their results effectively with each other and society.** Peer Review: Scientists in the same field verify each other’s results. Ways that communication happens: Lab Reports: Written accounts of investigations.

Objective Students will be able to explain how scientists use graphs to communicate. Students will be able to compare and contrast a scientific theory with a scientific law.

Communication in Science Graphs: Visually demonstrate relationships among data sets Graphs show trends in data (patterns.) 3 Main types: Line: X is independent variable. Y is dependent variable. Y - axis X - axis

Communication in Science Circle (Pie): Bar Graph: Represents a fixed quantity. Circle = 100% Slices = %tages of the whole. Shows quantities 5 4 3 2 1

Communication in Science Models - Scientific Model - an idea / picture map, system, or mathematical equation: E = mc Models often change with new information. Theories and Laws Scientific Theory: An explanation based on many observations during repeated investigations. Theories can be tested and they can be changed. - Not Proven. Example: Theory of Relativity. 2

Communication in Science Scientific Law: A principal that describes the behavior of a natural phenomenon. Events observed are the same every single time - proven. Example: Law of motions: objects in motion will stay in motion unless acted on by an outside force. 2
