ICTT-WIS 1st Session CAS perspective on WIS 12-13 Sep 2016 Doc03a J. Klausen, MeteoSwiss

What’s WIS for? Evolution of GTS using more diverse ICT technologies Allow non-NMHSs to participate Improve NRT capabilities for programs outside GOS Provision of catalogue services Facilitate DAR Advocate the usefulness of WMO

How important is WIS for CAS? Very little feedback obtained  can be interpreted to mean that WIS is intrinsically not important for CAS (because CAS is less about operational activities and more about research) CAS has not grasped the potential of WIS WIS has not delivered on its promises (yet) Access to WIS considered to be still too difficult for non-NMHSs Catalogue services do not obviously add additional value

Potential of WIS for CAS MACC, Copernicus, SDS-WAS, IGI3S Interaction with WIGOS in terms of metadata, DAR GAWSIS-OSCAR Harmonized exchanged formats Life-cycle management of information WWRP Exchange of research data, model data

Requirements Secure web services to enable providers outside NMHSs to provide information / data … more to be defined

Inter-Commission Task Team on WIS (ICTT-WIS) Terms of Reference (a)           Recommend to ICT-ISS a process for making decisions impacting on the management of the capacity of WIS networks, including the process for agreeing that data may be designated as for global exchange (using the “GlobalExchange” keyword in the associated WIS Discovery Metadata record that controls routinely exchange between GISCs and contents of the WIS cache); (b)           Recommend to ICT-ISS an escalation process for resolving issues that result from decisions made through the collaborative mechanisms established between the GISCs; (c)           Propose to ICT-ISS a mechanism for gathering the expectations of technical commissions and regional associations for their requirements of what WIS would provide for them in the 2020s and beyond; (d)           Inform ICT-ISS of the headline services that technical commissions and regional associations expected WIS to provide in the 2020s that could be used to guide the strategy for WIS before the detailed expectations had been gathered.
