“Why I Want To Teach” Nicole George

INTASC Standard, Description & Rationale Standard #9 Professional Learning and Ethical Practice The teacher engages in ongoing professional learning and uses evidence of continually evaluate his/her practice, particularly the effects of his/her choices and actions on others (learners, families, other professionals, and the community), and adapts practice to meet the needs of each learner.   Name of Artifact: “ Why I Want To Teach “ Date: March 14, 2013 Course: EDUC 101 Brief Description: For this assignment, I will write and present my personal statement of why I want to teach. The presentation will state why I want to teach, what are effective traits, and what student and community characteristic I desire when I begin to teach. Finally I will state what I will contribute to the teaching profession at this point in my journey. Rationale: To document my understanding of Standard #9, Professional Learning and Ethical Practice, I will make a presentation regarding my personal statement from observations, reflections, in-services experiences and classroom discussion. This will give me direction and guidance on becoming a great and effective educator. I will also have a foundation to grow and evolve my learning styles .

Personal Statement

Reason for Wanting To Teach I want to teach to make a difference in our children’s future. Every child should be given an opportunity to receive a good education and a chance to become what ever they desire. As an Educator I will play an important role in that journey. “When you know better you do better.”  ― Maya Angelou (Goodreads.com, 2013)

Effective Teacher Traits The effective traits I possess are as follows: A sensitivity to the classroom setting A desire to help students feel capable and competent An ability to respond thoughtfully to each student A personal capacity for juggling many tasks An appreciation of how children and young adults grow and change

Student Characteristics I want the student’s to possess the following characteristics: Appreciation and respect for other cultures, beliefs and races Desire and eagerness to learn Willingness to build a relationship with the Teacher Variety of personalities Kindness and compassion for self and others

Community Characteristics I want the community to possess the following characteristics: Sense of pride in the neighborhood Nurturing and compassionate environment A school partnership with a corporation or organization A cohesiveness among administrators and educators Active and decent level of parent participation A neighborhood watch and a relationship with area law enforcement

Contributions to the Profession What I will contribute to the profession: Connect with each of my students to provide them with effective learning styles Participate in extracurricular activities and volunteer for afterschool functions to show my solidarity to the students and school Continue to my learning and research to provide my students with creative and interesting lesson plans in conjunction with the standardized lessons Create and develop real-life lessons to prepare my students for life experiences Become a reflective practitioner, a teacher who consistently reflects on classroom events (both successes and problems) and modifies teaching practices accordingly.
