Introductions

What are we doing?

2 Questions What should students have learned as a result of interactions with your unit when they leave VIU? 2. How does your area have an impact on the student experience at VIU?

CIEL What should students (faculty) have learned as a result of interactions with (the CIEL) when they leave VIU? Faculty will have more tools and strategies to use moving forward given their specific questions about student learning and their context Faculty will know how to create engaging classes Faculty will have created relationships with specialists and know that they can come to us when they have questions or ideas

Learning experiences can become more student-centered and engaging How does your area (the CIEL) have an impact on the faculty and student experience at VIU? Learning experiences can become more student-centered and engaging Assessment and evaluation can become more in-line with learning outcomes Educational technologies can be leveraged for greater accessibility in learning Classrooms can become more inclusive and safer Faculty can become more confident and find more joy in teaching

Your turn… 1. What should students have learned as a result of interactions with your unit when they leave VIU? 2. How does your area have an impact on the student experience at VIU?

Once you have your statements written… Write them onto the giant post-its provided, and stick them on the wall.

Gallery Walk: read others’ answers Place a coloured sticky note next to items that seem to pertain to 2 or more units in Student Affairs (if there’s already one there, don’t bother adding!) See what you get done in Student Affairs! And see the specific contributions each area makes to the whole impact of Student Affairs

What do we (CIEL) DO to make these things happen? What should the faculty have learned as a result of interactions with your unit (the CIEL)? Faculty will have more tools and strategies to use moving forward given their specific questions about student learning and their context Faculty will know how to create engaging classes Faculty will have created relationships with specialists and know that they can come to us when they have questions or ideas Offer individual consultations aimed at analyzing faculty needs and context, and devising appropriate tools to reach faculty goals Offer Course (Re)design Intensives focused on student engagement Offer workshops emphasizing tools for student engagement and learning Follow up with faculty who have contacted us, meet them where and when they wish it, and keep all our communication confidential.

What do we (CIEL) DO to make these things happen? How does your area (the CIEL) have an impact on the faculty and student experience at VIU? Offer individual consultations aimed at the student experience Offer workshops that model student-centred practice experientially Offer Course (Re)design Intensives and workshops focused on learning outcomes and assessment Offer workshops and consultations emphasizing what educational technology tools can do Work with faculty in Indigenous Learning Circles, and in consultation around creating classroom community Ensure that all of our communications are supportive, and encourage faculty to reflect on how changes in their practice affect them and their students Learning experiences can become more student- centered and engaging Assessment and evaluation can become more in-line with learning outcomes Educational technologies can be leveraged for greater accessibility in learning Classrooms can become more inclusive and safer Faculty can become more confident and find more joy in teaching

Creating Buy-in Back “at Home” Schedule a meeting to go through the same process we just did OR Send colleagues a description of this meeting’s activities, and a draft of your answers…ask for feedback Ensure there is reciprocal communication: Integrate feedback, and send them a new version for more feedback before ‘finalizing’ (by March 21) Stress the value-added to your unit from this exercise: Communally agreed upon goals Clear expectations for implementation and outcomes of activities Greater clarity in talking with others about your contributions to VIU Other?
