Families and Friends Many times family and friends fought against one another

Southern troops Southern troops became younger and had less equipment and supplies

South was destroyed Many cities in the South were burned like Richmond Atlanta

Disease Disease was a major killer

Combat Fighting was brutal and often man-to-man (up close)

Women Women took on more responsibility They had to run businesses in the North and plantations in the South

Collapse of Economy Confederate economy collapsed because Confederate money became worthless

African Americans Fought in both Union and Confederate armies Confederacy used slaves in the navy and the army Union got slaves to sign up early in the war Paid less than white soldiers

African American soldiers were discriminated against and often segregated under command of white officers
