FOSSILS !!!

Paleontologist What is a Paleontologist? Someone who studies fossils from long ago Paleontologists use fossils to try to figure out three main things about fossils: Identity and origin of the fossil the fossil's environment what the fossil can tell us about the history of the earth

Fossils Fossil – a preserved clue to life from long ago Bones, teeth, shells, and wood Trace Fossils – a fossil that shows changes that long-dead animals made in their surroundings Foot print, any shape left behind by a fossil

Fossils Mold Fossil – A fossil formed when an animal, plant, dies and is covered by sediment, its flesh decays and bones deteriorate, and a cavity remains below the ground surface Shells, Eggs, Plants Resin (Amber) Fossils – a perfectly preserved animal (fly) that is surrounded by amber/resin Fly

Different Types of Fossils Fossils (Body Fossils) Trace Fossils Mold Fossils Amber Fossils (Resin)
