Emphasis Is the center or focus of attention and interest within a design. It is the feature or features that command attention and make a design visually interesting.

Architectural features may be the focal point: Fire place Decorative windows Columns Arches

Other items used as a focal point: * Works of Art and Accessories

There are guidelines that you need to follow: For emphasis to work There are guidelines that you need to follow: * The point of emphasis should command your attention, but not dominate the overall design. * Other elements in the room should not compete for the emphasis.

Tips to create emphasis: 1. Arrange furniture around a focal point

2. Use color, texture or pattern 3. Placement of accessories

4. Use lighting

The focal point should be supported by the rest of the room. It should somehow relate to but not dominate the rest of the room. Lets look at a few more examples of emphasis. Fold

Emphasis Board You will draw a type of emphasis that you will design a space around. Each Board must contain a sample for each item listed on the instruction sheet. Fold the paper into a popup board following teachers instructions. All of the samples will be arranged on the popup board.
