RUN-ON, COMMA SPLICE, AND FUSED SENTENCES A comma splice contains two main clauses illegally joined by a comma. The problem looks like this: main clause + , + main clause = Death!. A fused sentence, on the other hand, contains two main clauses illegally run together with no punctuation whatsoever. The problem looks like this: main clause + Ø + main clause = Death!. Run-on Sentences are a result of a comma splice ir fused sentence because they have two separate direct objects and need punctuation added. As a writer, you must keep in mind that comma splices and fused sentences make you look like an amateur. They tell your reader that you cannot control the construction of a sentence, the most basic building block of a piece of writing. Learning to identify comma splices and fused sentences is the first step to fixing the problem.

Only daughter page 84     The Story is about a young girl, growing as the only daughter of six other brothers. When growing up, the father includes her as one of his “Siete Niños,” (Seven Boys). She grows up near with her six brothers, and learns a lot about each other. She wants her father to understand that she is important also, but the father diverts his attention to her brothers. Then when she is in the 5th grade, she shares her dreams to go to college, and do something with her life. Her brothers all laugh at her. Her father says  while in college, she will find a husband there. The father’s judgment and the common stereotype states that Her destiny is to become a good “House Wife.” But after four years of college and some time at the undergraduate school, she still hasn't got a husband let alone a boyfriend. Her father says that she has wasted her education. She later says that she always was writing for her father, and writing for mainstream culture. Ten years went by, and now she is now a professional writer creating works of art. Her father has developed an unwell sickness. She gives her father some of her own story to read in Spanish (Father’s native language), and he likes it a lot. At the end of reading, the father becomes very proud of her daughter… 

Elements of the Story a Plot & Setting: Takes place Chicago, Illinois in the mid to the late 20th century, in a household of nine including six brothers and one sister. Crisis & Conflict: The girl trying to help her father believe that she is not a statistic of some common belief, or some stereotypical theory by becoming a renounced and professional author and writer. Types of conflict: External Conflict (Self vs. Man) and Internal Conflict (Self and Society). In this case, the external conflict is between The Daughter and the Father, and the internal conflict is between the Protagonist (Daughter) and the societal stereotype of a woman.

Resolution: At the end of the short story, the Daughter proves to her father that she didn’t waste her education and used it for a good purpose, and to show the Protagonist (Daughter) that her father that he is indeed proud of her.  Point of view: The narrator is telling the story in First person, using the words “I, me, my.”  The narrator also is describing and telling the story like she was the story.  First Person is usually used if the author is  actually telling what was experienced, and what really happened in the story.  In my judgment, I think that the author, Sandra Cisneros is actually the narrator who is  telling us the audience what occurred in Sandra’s childhood and her relationship with her father.

Mothers and Fathers A mother was the heart of the family: the one who cooked, cleaned and cared for the children on a full-time basis. Similar responsibilities were also expected of daughters as it was their job to learn how to be a woman from their mother. Fathers generally took charge of family decisions, and their authority was rarely challenged by either the mother or children. Machismo, defined as the type of behavior corresponding to traditional ideas about men being very strong and aggressive. Boys in Mexican families also expressed machismo in their relationships with other men, where constantly asserting masculinity was expected. These roles are similar to what were the traditional version of American family values before the 1960s and 1970s.
