Division With Remainders Grids

What does the word ‘remainder’ mean What does the word ‘remainder’ mean? How do I write it down in my answer?

Question: 9 ÷ 2 = ? Sometimes it is easier to think of this as a problem you might find in everyday life. See the next slide !!!!

Word Problem: My mum has 9 sweets Word Problem: My mum has 9 sweets. She divides them between me and my sister. How many will we have each? Will there be any left over?

Now it is your turn to do some… but you are going to use a grid to record your answers on.

For each grid you will need to draw 5 vertical lines on your whiteboard like this ….

Then draw 5 horizontal lines on your whiteboard like this ….

Then copy the numbers on the examples shown Then copy the numbers on the examples shown. Make sure to look at the top left corner to see what sort of calculation needs to be done. ÷ 10 20 9 2 1 3

Divide the horizontal numbers by the vertical numbers, one at a time Divide the horizontal numbers by the vertical numbers, one at a time. It is very important to do it this way. Why? Your teacher will show you how on this example as some questions will have remainders.. ÷ 10 20 9 2 1 3

Answers ÷ 10 20 9 2 5 4 r1 1 3 3 r1 6 r2

Questions ÷ 10 6 4 2 3
