Geography Terms 6th grade 2016

Ocean One of five major bodies of salt water that surrounded the continents.

A part of an ocean or sea that extends into the land Gulf A part of an ocean or sea that extends into the land

Bay Body of water partially enclosed by land, smaller than the gulf.

A narrow stretch of water joining two larger bodies of water. Strait - A narrow stretch of water joining two larger bodies of water.

Delta - (Mouth) The place where a river widens and empties into a larger body of water.

Tributary A stream that flows into a larger body of water.

Glacier - A slow moving mass of ice (usually in mountains)

Mountain Range - A series (group) of peaks higher than hills.

Elevation - Height of land above sea level.

Valley - Lower land between hills mountains.

Hills - A natural elevation of the earth’s surface, smaller than a mountain.

Plateau - Area of high, usually flat land but can be rolling.

Plain - A large area of flat, level land, (low elevation) and often covered with grasses.

Arable Land - Land that is suitable (good) for growing crops.

Peninsula - A piece of land surrounded by water on three sides.

Isthmus - A narrow piece of land that connects two larger pieces of land.

Island - An area of land completely surrounded by water.

Archipelago A series or group of islands.

Coast - Land along the edge of a continent that borders water.

Cape - A point of land along the coastline that extends into the water.

Tropics Area between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. Typical weather in the Tropics…...

Desert - An area of land with little or no water or plant life.
