Device Design Materials: PVC Pipe Scrap Wood Hotwheels Car Hotwheels Car Track Marble Funnel Plastic tubing Lock Pulley System UT banner
Design Overview The device begins by placing a marble into the plastic tubing. The marble shoots out of the tubing into a funnel The marble exits the funnel and rolls down the pvc pipe configuration The marble collides with a hotwheels car The car travels down the track and strikes a platform that is balancing a lock The lock is attached to a string that is wrapped around the pulley When the lock falls, the banner is raised
Energy Calculations Projectile Motion: Marble shooting out of the plastic tubing. Conservation of Translational and Rotational Energy: Marble rolling down ramp substituting Conservation of Linear Momentum: Marble colliding with the toy car
Energy Calculations Cont. Center of Mass: Balancing the lock on the platform
Conclusions Construction issues: Drilling the correct size holes in the PVC pipe Determining the correct height and angle of the track Troubleshooting the ramp apparatus to work every time Starting at the end and working toward the beginning to construct the device More difficult than originally intended. Good to see how the equations work in real life
