Induction of the expression of cardioprotective proteins after mild-to-moderate consumption of alcohol  Motoaki Sato, Cesar Fraga, Dipak K. Das  Pathophysiology  Volume 10, Issue 2, Pages 139-145 (April 2004) DOI: 10.1016/j.pathophys.2003.10.005

Fig. 1 Effect of alcohol on left ventricular function. Rats were fed alcohol orally up to a period of 3 weeks. At the end of 3 weeks, the rats were anesthetized and isolated perfused working hearts were subjected to 30min ischemia followed by 2h of reperfusion. Aortic flow (AF) (left) and left ventricular dveloped pressure (LVDP) (right) are shown at baseline and after 60 and 120min of reperfusion. The results are expressed as means±S.E.M. of at least six hearts per group. *P<0.05 vs. control. Pathophysiology 2004 10, 139-145DOI: (10.1016/j.pathophys.2003.10.005)

Fig. 2 Effects of alcohol on myocardial infarct size (left) and cardiomyocyte apoptosis (right). Rats were fed alcohol orally up to a period of 3 weeks. At the end of 3 weeks, the rats were anesthetized and isolated perfused working hearts were subjected to 30min ischemia followed by 2h of reperfusion. The infarct size was measured by TTC staining as described in Section 2. The apoptotic cardiomyocytes were detected by Tunel staining in conjunction with a specific antibody against α-myosin heavy chain to specifically stain the cardiomyocytes as described in Section 2. The results are expressed as means±S.E.M. of at least six hearts per group. *P<0.05 vs. control. Pathophysiology 2004 10, 139-145DOI: (10.1016/j.pathophys.2003.10.005)

Fig. 3 Effects of alcohol on the MDA content of the heart. The rats were fed alcohol orally up to a period of 3 weeks. At the end of 3 weeks, rats were anesthetized and isolated perfused working hearts were subjected to 30min ischemia followed by 2h of reperfusion. The MDA content was measured by HPLC as described in Section 2. The results are expressed as means±S.E.M. of at least six hearts per group. *P<0.05 vs. control. Pathophysiology 2004 10, 139-145DOI: (10.1016/j.pathophys.2003.10.005)

Fig. 4 Effects of alcohol on the induction of the expression of HSP 70, HO-1 and MnSOD protein content of the heart. Rats were fed alcohol orally up to a period of 3 weeks. At the end of 3 weeks, rats were anesthtized and isolated perfused working hearts were subjected to 30min ischemia followed by 2h of reperfusion. The HSP 70, HO-1 and MnSOD were measured by Western blot analysis as described in Section 2. Results are representative of at least six hearts per group. The results are expressed as means±S.E.M. of at least six hearts per group. *P<0.05 vs. control. Pathophysiology 2004 10, 139-145DOI: (10.1016/j.pathophys.2003.10.005)
