1822: Denmark Vesey – SC: Caught before he carried out his revolt. 1831: Nat Turner – VA: He led a revolt that killed a number of whites. Black Codes become harsher because slave owners begin to get scared. They forbid slaves from owning property, leaving without permission, owning a gun, testifying in court against a white person, or learning to read & write. Slaves were viewed as property! The House of Representatives! And who leads the House? The Speaker… Henry Clay! The House chooses J.Q. Adams as President… and the next thing you know, Henry Clay becomes his Secretary of State… hmmm…. Suspicious? Adams & Clay are accused of making a CORRUPT BARGAIN! A majority would be more than 50%! Jackson’s supporters became known as the Jacksonian Democrats. How did this election end the Era of Good Feelings? Adams did not do much as President other than supporting Henry Clay’s American System for internal improvements.
