FUTURE MOBILITY AND LONG-TERM REQUIREMENTS OF ROADS INFRASTRUCTURE ALISTAIR HUNTER DIRECTOR – INFRASTRUCTURE ADVISORY, ARUP

Demand drivers Transportation and social trends Key technology transitions The impact of economics Government policy and environmental pressures Ashington Learning Partnership 50 Years in the Midlands Midlands - Big Day Out Hannah Stockley, Naomi Forrester, Sandeep Kang and Louise WattsRebecca Millican   IllustrationIllustration Original As part of Arup’s ‘50 years in the Midlands’ celebrations we wanted to encourage staff to go out and see our work in the built environment. To incentivise this, the Visual Communications team designed an illustrative what’s-on guide for our sub-region, all based around local Arup projects. We wanted to make the piece more inspiring and fun, moving away from traditional brochure style project photography by creating a range of colourful illustrations for each of our Midlands Projects. This style then called for an illustrative version of the fifty year logo to be designed. Using simplistic elements from the project illustrations, we formed a new colourful logo which broke the encasings of the original silhouette logo that was designed for the 50 years’ campaign. As part of a joint venture with Ashington Learning Partnership, Arup is working on a two-year project with a junior year group, integrating STEM focused learning into their general curriculum via an engineering project. We were approached to design a display banner to give Arup a presence within the school and highlight the joint venture project. The banner was to highlight the various aspects of engineering i.e. building design, construction, energy, geology, town planning and transport. The illustration developed features simplified representations of these themes and uses a bright, playful colour palette to suit the age group of the audience. As an added element, we want to encourage people to take a photo of their day out with friends and family and enter into a photo competition. Documenting Arup Staff and projects in the region in a fun way. TRANSPORTATION AND SOCIAL TRENDS Roads dominate our travel: 80% of passenger kilometres travelled and 76% of transported goods 11% fewer cars registered in the UK during Q1 2018 than the same period last year Diesel car registrations were down 33% compared to 2017 Q1. Ultra low emission vehicles (ULEVs) car registrations were up 11% on Q1 2017 Customers – changing driver / ownership trends – basic stats on rail versus road usage to provide context Source ORR http://orr.gov.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0003/39342/passenger-rail-usage-2018-19-q1.pdf Source: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/729581/vehicle-licensing-statistics-january-to-march-2018.pdf Source: DfT Vehicle Licensing Stats Q1 2018, DfT Transport Statistics Great Britain 2017

EMISSIONS AND CLIMATE CHANGE GOVERNMENT POLICY AND ENVIRONMENTAL PRESSURES Transport accounts for around a quarter of the UK carbon emissions UK must cut greenhouse emissions by 57% from 1990 by the end of the next decade Committee on Climate Change want three-fifths of new cars to be electric by 2030 Policy and regulation EMISSIONS AND CLIMATE CHANGE Environment – CO2 / climate change predictions – i.e. will this force our hand to transition to EV / reduce coverage .. More than two thirds of transport-related greenhouse gas emissions are from road transport
