Dr. Charles drew Miriya

I choose Dr. Charles Drew because without him we wouldn’t have a blood bank. Due to the fact that I am interested in the health field , it makes a difference for me and my future.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION Dr. Charles Drew was the first African- American to develop a blood bank. He was a renowned physician and medical researcher and the first black surgeon examiner of the American Board of Surgery, Drew revolutionized medicine by creating a system that allowed the immediate and safe transfusion of blood plasma. He was born June 04 , 1904 in Washington , D.C. In 1929, Drew attended medical school at McGill University in Canada, he studied with Dr. Beattie and he had starting developing an interest in blood storage before he graduated in 1933. In 1935, Drew returned to Washington D.C. to become a professor at Howard university’s. In 1938, the Rockefeller Foundation offered Drew a research fellowship at New York’s Columbia – Presbyterian Medical Center to study blood.  BACKGROUND INFORMATION

He is remembered for his outstanding changes and researches on blood transfusions. His techniques for better blood storage and researches in blood transfusion helped save thousands of lives during the World War II. He received the Spingarn Medal in 1944 The Spingarn Medal : is awarded annually by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) for outstanding achievement by an African American. Acheivement

His research on blood plasma lead to the invention of the first blood bank. Blood plasma is a component of blood Blood banks collect blood and separate it into its various components so they can be used most effectively according to the needs of the patient. importance

Without Dr. Charles Drew research we wouldn’t be able to do half the things we are today. Such as , blood transfusions. Sometimes patients don’t necessarily need blood just the components of the blood (plasma). I think that because Dr. Charles Drew was so light he got further in life because he could pas off as white.
