Science 7

Did you…? Finish your Branches of Science worksheet? Put a name on it? Put it in the hand in bin?

Review From Yesterday What are the 3 Branches of Science? What does life science study? What does physical science study? What does earth science study?

THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD

Science Always begins with a Question! Why? Why Not? How? When? Where? What? Will it happen again?

What next? Once we have a question we have to think of a logical way to explore the answer What’s a logical way?  THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD https://www.brainpop.com/science/scientificinquiry/scientificmethod/

Brainpop- The Scientific Method Terminology Problem (Question) Background Information Observation Inference Hypothesis Experiment: Variables Collect/Analyze Data Conclusion Theory

Background Information Analyze what we already know to help generate hypothesis Connecting old (prior) knowledge with your problem Ex: Tim and Moby know that plants need water and that the plant is a fig tree

Observation Also used to help us generate our hypothesis Observation: the act of careful watching and listening : the activity of paying close attention to someone or something in order to get information Ex: the leaves are brown/falling off and the soil is wet and squishy

Observations Look at the picture below and make observations (record in your notes)

Inference Inference: a conclusion or opinion that is formed because of known facts or evidence Ex: Moby is watering the plants too much

What’s the difference? An observation is something you see, describe or measure. Inference is making connections between what you see and what you think- it is an assumption or opinion based on your knowledge and observations

Observation or Inference? There are 2 people in the picture Observation or Inference? The two people are friends

Observation or Inference? There is a mother and daughter in the picture Observation or Inference? The present is wrapped in blue and yellow paper

Observation or Inference? The people are dancing. Observation or Inference? They are at a halloween party.

Observation to Conclusion Activity-PDF What are Vet’s Observations? What are his Inferences? Did I just make an inference there?

Worksheet- Observation or Inference? Complete the worksheet and put in the pass in bin
