Taking advantage of mismatches in the red zone and field Matt Duffy

Mismatch concept We are attempting to create 2 vertical looks for the QB - same side or full field We will always tell the QB the type of read/progression he is to use (patriot/dolphin/scan)

Why mismatch not concepts?? We are getting an unbelievable amount of man coverage and if it isn’t man…it is man Less concepts more mismatch!! (cover 3/cover 4/ Cover 0)

Mismatch concept We will always give the QB a third/fourth progression The third progression is always a staple route of our offense The third progression may change weekly based on defensive structure At the very least we can throw pivots on mismatches

OrdeR of formational thinking Our best receiver is our boundary slot 3x1 2x2 3x2 4x1 Love to put best WR at back to easily move him to create the mismatch (Called “Star” RB put his head down and lines up a field #1) All else stays the same for other receivers

“RULE OF 5” Order of process Weak Safety Free Safety Sam Will Mike BC then FC

“rule of 5” Weak side Safety This player defines most of our offensive run and pass planning each week Is he a box player Can he tackle our RB/QB

“rule of 5” Weak side Safety If he can, can he cover our best slot Does he play #3 vertical in trips- can we dictate the answer to the previous question What happens in empty 4x1??? Hudl picture

“rule of 5” Free Safety Is he an alley player Can he tackle our RB/QB Can he cover our best slot receiver

“rule of 5” Free Safety Is he a player in conflict Where is his trips alignment What happens in empty 4x1??? hudl

“rule of 5” Sam LB Is he an alley player Can he tackle our RB/QB Can he cover our best slot receiver…. 3x1??

“rule of 5” Is he a player in conflict Where is his trips alignment Sam LB Is he a player in conflict Where is his trips alignment What happens in empty 4x1??? hudl

“rule of 5” Will LB Does he wall #2 in 2x2…. If so, who has weak flat Does he have #2 in 3x1….the process begins …if so then we will attack the Will with back or Sam/Free with our slot Hudl hudl

“rule of 5” Will LB Can he cover the back out.. Wheel/arrow/option If will has the back and weak safety has #3 vertical- then who has weak flats and can FS cover #2 (right green 986 R wheelo) 2 verts and shallow (staple) hudl

“RULE OF 5” Mike LB Can he cover a pivot route Does he have the back vertical in 2x2…process Does he have the back in 3x2… process… if he has back and can cover him.. (Rocket green 170 X Shallow)

3X2 EXAMPLE OF PROCESS Can weak safety cover our boundary slot…process (Fit) Can free safety cover our field #2…..process (Fit) Can Sam cover our field #2… process (Fit) Does the will wall #2 in the boundary (Will/Flat) Can the mike cover a pivot or #3 vertical (Pivot/Bronco/Hook) Do they chase our best slot with their best cover man hudl

Moving the back to create mismatches 9-7-5-4-6-8 Flip/flop Rip/liz Create a mismatch and do it extremely fast Easiest way: put best receiver at RB and RB covered by their best cover guy
