Wednesday, March 27th HW: No homework. Aim: How did the Berlin Blockade affect the Superpowers? Do Now: Identify four countries that occupied Germany after WWII.

BERLIN BLOCKADE In June 1948 Stalin cut off highway, water, and rail traffic into Berlin’s western zones. 2.5 million West Berliners faced starvation. Stalin hope by blockading West Berlin the Allies would surrender their zones to the Soviets.

Imagine it’s the summer of 1948 As an American, how do you think the Western Allies should react to Stalin’s blockade of Berlin? Should the Western Allies: Give into Stalin’s demand and hand over control of West Berlin to the Soviets? This would prevent 2.5 million people from starving. 2. Blast through the blockade and invade the Soviet zone? This would start an armed conflict but show Stalin who has the most power. 3. Fly food, fuel, and other supplies into West Berlin? This is a massive undertaking, requiring much organization and immense cost. In your opinion, which is the best option? Explain your choice in 5-10 sentences.
