Chapter 1: Algebraic Expressions and Integers Section 1-5: Adding Integers

Adding Integers Using Tiles

Adding Integers Using Tiles =-5

Adding Integers Same sign – The sum of two positive integers is positive. The sum of two negative integers is negative. Different signs – The sign stays with the bigger +/- value. ex. -6 + 4 = ? The negative is with the bigger number (6) therefore the answer will be negative. -6 + 4 = -2

Practice #1 Find each sum: 7 + (-18) Different signs and the bigger number has a negative, therefore our answer will be negative. 7 + (-18) = -11 -12 + -31 Same sign so we get a bigger negative number! -12 + -31 = -43

You Try!!! Find each sum. -22 + (-16) Same sign!!!! -22 + (-16) = -38 60 + (-13) Different signs and the bigger number is positive so our answer will be positive! 60 + (-13) = 47

Practice #2 Find the sum: -12 + (-6) + 15 + (-2) -18 + 15 + (-2) -3 + (-2) -5!!!!

You Try!!! Find each sum. 1 + (-3) + 2 + (-10) -2 + 2 + (-10) 0 + (-10) -10!!!! -250 + 200 + (-100) + 220 -50 + (-100) + 220 -150 + 220 70!!!!
