Purposes for Reading & Writing Why do students want to read and write in a foreign/second language? How do students learn to read and write in a foreign/second language? How much influence is there from the L1 and C1 in learning to read/write in the L2? How can we as teachers access and accommodate every learner’s needs?

Purposes for Reading and Writing As with most language learning and acquisition processes, reading and writing must be accomplished developmentally Teachers must be purposeful in determining what is to be taught and when and under what circumstances

Purposes for Reading and Writing In initial foreign/second language instruction students must be aware of writing to read and/or reading to write Reading and writing are introduced as means of communication Students must be convinced that both are fun and enjoyable

Purposes for Reading and Writing Gain knowledge Entertainment Leisure

What are other purposes of Reading and Writing?
