Prohibition

Prohibition Era Refers to the period from January 1920 until April 1933 when the 18th Amendment was in effect.

Early Movement Begins with the Temperance Movement (1800s) Social Movement Goal- abstain to protect individual health and family well-being Temperance and morality were the slogan of the day Temperance eventually finds followers who feel that a total ban would be better for the nation- The Prohibition Movement is formed

Early Movement During WWI, more supporters for the Movement. Wheat/barley needed to make beer/alcohol and this would be better used overseas feeding our soldiers. It is patriotic to support war effort/Prohibition States instituted the National Prohibition Enforcement Act which forbade the manufacture and sale of beverages with an alcoholic content greater than 0.5 percent. This was done in many states long before the Amendment was passed. So many states were “dry” before the amendment. (Thanks World War I)
