Quotation Marks: what they do Indicate a speaker’s exact words Indicate a quotation within a quotation Punctuate the title of: a song an article a poem a chapter in a book a short story a T.V. episode

Examples of quotation marks in use Indicate a speaker’s exact words. Izzy remarked, “I have lost my appetite.” Indicate a quotation within a quotation. Mark asked, “Did you hear Helen say ‘I am tired?’” Indicate exact words from a quoted source. In the play The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Juliet says, “My only love sprung from my only hate” (1.5.138).

Examples of quotation marks in use Punctuate the title of a song. My favorite song is “The Taste of Ink” by The Used. Punctuate the title of a poem. Did you read “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”? Punctuate the title of a short story. Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” is surprising.
