Presentation transcript:

STDTest.org Launched in 2003 as partnership btween SFDPH and ISIS – Syphilis testing only First 6 months,140 syphilis tests performed. 6 (4.3%) new syphilis infections identified: four infectious and two latent; 5 were in gay men, of whom one was HIV-positive, two HIV-negative and two unknown. All received medical eval and treatment (Klausner, Levine, Kent, AIDSCare, Nov. 2004)

Assessment Informal discussions with community members about low usage rates of STDTest.org Reasons: One test - syphilis, not complete panel Hard to convey what it is Concern abt. confidentiality re: gov’t oversight

Community Advisory Board Gathered together representative group of SF residents to enhance STDtest.org Cross-section of youth, clinicians, MSM, Latinos and African-Americans Met twice in-person (June and Oct. ’07), and multiple email exchanges

Pictures rotate through 15 different images of singles, couples and groups Prominent HOW IT WORKS button

In order to be consistent with national testing recommendations, implemented simple quiz to determine recommended tests Anyone who has symptoms or is a partner of someone diagnosed with an STD is given instructions to see a clinician, not USE STDtest.org

Using private lab system (LabCorp) – do not do rectal collections, so inc. do-it-yourself instructions All disease names link to information about the STD, as well as link to BASICS in the navigation bar at the top

At this point, a person who is HIV-positive can “un-check” the HIV testing recommendation

Every field must be filled in, zip codes must reflect city and county of SF

Lab Slip is in 2 pages; contains Unique ID by which individual will receive results

Standard page for when test results not available yet; HIV test results – website lets patient know when they are ready; must get results by phone; all results given explanation, inc. that if positive, health dept will be contacting them to ensure proper treatment, AND referrals to local public health clinic

All services are provided free of charge; donations will be solicited to cover costs

Usability Testing and Launch Recently completed usability testing with 12 SF residents Currently implementing changes from user comments Planned launch early April, 2008 Marketing plan in development Evaluation plan in development
