To support your understanding of the Literacy and Numeracy demands in your workplace and how they relate to the ability and efficiency of your employees to… get the job done!

Introduction: Numeracy This set of guides will support you to see what your employees are able to cope with in terms of their ability to: Read with understanding Write to communicate Listen with understanding Speak to communicate Make sense of numbers In relation to the demands in the workplace, for example: Documentation, e.g., Payslips Forms, e.g., Hazard Reporting Tasks, e.g., SOPs

How to use the guides Each guide is ‘subject’ based and gives an example of a workplace task/document. The guides show you what your employees will currently be able to cope with, at each level of the Learning Progressions and explain why. You can work through each level or go straight to the slide that relates to the literacy and numeracy skill levels of your employees (results from TEC Assessment Tool). Please refer to the Skills Highway website for FAQs.

Employees’ skill levels Your employees will do an initial assessment. Their levels appear in a report like this example. The results show their skills range from Step 1 (the lowest) to Step 6 (the highest).

WHAT EXAMPLES Add, subtract, multiply and divide to solve problems Count numbers in a sequence from 0 to at least 20 Count in 5s and/ or 10s The employee is able to: check what has been delivered, against the amount ordered, by counting the number of boxes on a pallet and how many pallets there are. STEP 2 Use a workplace order sheet WHAT EXAMPLES Count back in ones and tens Work out x 2 by counting 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 Work out 6 x 2 by counting 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 Work out parts of whole numbers into equal parts e.g., 1/3 of 12 Order numbers from 1 – 100 Count in 2, 5 and 10 to 100 Add single digit numbers The employee is able to: take stock by counting in 2s, 5s and 10s of current supply in order to know how much to order work out the order may include part boxes, e.g., 1/3 of 12 or half a box. Use a recipe/mixing chemicals Ingredients 12 cupcakes 24 cupcakes white flour 2 cups   sugar 1 ½ cups baking powder 2 ½ tsp. salt 1 tsp. butter or margarine 1/3 cup milk 2/3 cup vanilla semi-sweet chocolate 2/3 bar STEP 3 Use a recipe/mixing chemicals WHAT EXAMPLES Work out addition and subtraction of 2 digit numbers Know that ¾ is greater than ½ Order numbers up to 1000 Calculate with whole numbers as long as they´re not too big Recognise fractions, decimals and percentages The employee is able to: follow a recipe and work out fractions of ingredients to scale up or down mix cleaning products.

Use information from a payslip STEP 4 Use information from a payslip WHAT EXAMPLES Work out addition, subtraction and multiplication of 3 digit numbers without a calculator Need support to divide bigger numbers Work out the fraction of a number Order decimal, percentages, fractions and whole numbers up to 1 million The employee is able to: budget according to income work out an amount to save for the future forecast for savings/Kiwisaver apply for a personal loan.

Make building calculations STEP 5 Make building calculations WHAT EXAMPLES Work out addition and subtraction of decimals up to 3 decimal places Order decimal up to 3 decimal places Estimate multiplication of two digit numbers and use a calculator to get a more accurate answer Multiply and divide whole numbers and decimals by 10, 100 and 1000 Convert fractions, percentages and decimals The employee is able to: add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers and decimals, e.g., when working with different sizes of materials interpret building plans and perform accurate calculations to determine amount of materials needed.

STEP 6 Complete a time sheet Add, subtract, multiply and divide: WHAT EXAMPLES Add, subtract, multiply and divide: fractions with more than one part whole numbers decimals The employee is able to: work with time to record hours work out averages.
