Building Inclusive Communities

What is an inclusive community? A community that: Promotes respect, equal treatment and opportunities Eliminates all forms of discrimination Engages all citizens in decision-making Values diversity Responds to racist and discriminating incidents

Why is building an inclusive community important? Injustice should not be tolerated Each citizen has the right to help make decisions Diversity enriches our lives

When should you build an inclusive community? Any time Consider motivation because it affects: Types and sequence of strategies selected Resources available Amount of support and obstruction Rate of progress Expected outcomes

How can an inclusive community be built? Do your homework Engage influential leaders Work with community council Bring together different groups Create opportunities to share

How can an inclusive community be built? (cont.) Identify and exchange assets Respect and transform conflicts Ensure institutional support Acknowledge and celebrate success Sustain relationships, strategies, and changes
