U.S. History Thursday, March 29th, 2018

Warm Up Learning Target: I will examine U.S. policy options toward the Soviet Union and the resulting Truman Doctrine. 1. What is "Pax Americana”? 2. What is a policy of “Containment”?

US Policy Towards the Soviet Union Examine a poster for each of the four options. Summarize each option in a couple of sentences on the front of your worksheet. Also write down why the US might choose this option. When you are finished, complete the back (ranking options and beliefs)

US Policy Towards the Soviet Union With your table group determine which of the four options you would recommend to President Truman. It is possible for you to combine options or take a new approach. You will be asked to identify which two beliefs most strongly guided your decision.

The Truman Doctrine In a dramatic speech to a joint session of Congress, President Truman asked for U.S. assistance for Greece & Turkey to forestall communist domination of the two nations. The Truman Doctrine was a de facto declaration of the Cold War: the US needed to provide military & economic assistance to protect nations from communist aggression.

The Truman Doctrine Popcorn Reading Group discussion

The Truman Doctrine On the bottom half of the first worksheet write a short paragraph 3-4 sentences describing which option (1-4) does the Truman Doctrine most closely correlate to? Why do you think Truman chose this strategy?
