Annotations English 10

What does annotation mean? Clue: what word do you think relates to annotation?

Definition of Annotation A critical or explanatory note or body of notes added to a text. In order to become critical thinkers it is NECESSARY for students to interact with the text. By interacting with the text you allow yourself to move beyond what is being said and relate it to the “bigger” picture (a.k.a. the Why of any piece of writing).

Why do we annotate? Sample annotated lyrics Group together with a total of 4 people and analyze the annotations together. Compile a list of what this person pointed out in the lyrics. Literary devices, emotions, memories etc.

What things should we take note of? Give definitions to difficult and unfamiliar words Give background information, especially explaining customs, traditions, and ways of living that may be unfamiliar to the reader Help explain what is going on in the text Make connections to other texts Point out the use of literary techniques and how they add meaning to the text

Contd. Can use humor (or other styles that might be quite different from the main text) Reveal that the writer of these annotations knows his or her reader well

So… When reading a story, novel, poem, or other literature how do those affect you? How do those effects cause you to connect with texts?

How do different literature pieces effect us? Can touch us emotionally, making us feel happiness as well as sadness Remind us of our childhood experiences Teach us something new Change our perspective on an issue Help us see how we can better relate to others around us Help us see the world through someone else’s experiences.
