2018 Sweet Corn Weed Control Herbicide active ingredients: > 18 Tillage Cover crops Hand weeding Numerous weed management options exist for sweet corn producers. In fact, of all the vegetables produced in Georgia more options exist in sweet corn than any other cropping system. Read slide

No Emerged Weeds At Planting Tillage Cover Crop Burndown

Preemergence! BURNDOWN: Roundup (3 d preplant) Gramoxone Aim For ryegrass: Roundup fb by Gramoxone For horseweed: 2,4-D applied 7-14 d preplant.

Apply PRE right after seeding! Atrazine (~1 qt/A) + Dual II Magnum (~1 pt/A) Dual and numerous alachlor products are available……….Dual II includes a safener which can make difference on sweet corn

Apply PRE right after seeding! POST OVERTOP Atrazine + Prowl (early POST through 12”) Atrazine + Laudis (data looks great)

Percent Texas Millet Control at Harvest In Conventional Sweet Corn Percent Texas Millet Control at Harvest In Conventional Sweet Corn. TyTy, GA. 97 a 97 a 78 b 36 c Four common systems to control Texas millet (our most challenging grass) potentially used in Georgia point out the value of Laudis herbicide which is a relatively new tool for sweet corn producers. Laudis is extremely safe and effective on small grasses when used correctly. Our favorite program would be Bicep II Magnum (Dual II Magnum + Atrazine) PRE followed by Laudis POST if possible. PRE Atrazine Prowl + Atrazine Atrazine Laudis Bicep II Mag Prowl + Atrazine Bicep II Mag Laudis POST Atrazine 1 qt/A; Bicep Mag. 2 qt/A; Laudis 3 oz/A.

Sweet Corn and Texas Millet Response to Laudis Systems. Ty Ty, GA. Discuss photo’s Atrazine PRE Laudis + MSO 3” millet Bicep II Magnum Lauidis + MSO 3” millet

Sweet Corn and Texas Millet Response to Laudis Systems. Ty Ty, GA. Laudis must be applied timely or just like any other herbicide it will not work effectively. Non-treated control Laudis 3 oz + MSO to 6” millet

Laudis 3.5 SC active ingredient = Tembotrione field corn, seed corn, sweet corn and popcorn controls crabgrass, goosegrass, broadleaf signalgrass, and Texas panicum (millet) up to 3 inches Read slide

Laudis 3.5 SC do not apply to Merit or Shogun cultivars 3 oz product per acre from emergence to V7 include an MSO (methylated seed oil) can tank mix with atrazine only one application Read slide

Laudis: Carryover Concerns? Label 4 months: grains 8 months: soybean 10 months: cotton, tomato, snapbean 18 months: cucurbits, other crops UGA has limited carryover data! The greatest limitation with Laudis is the potential for carryover. We believe these rotational intervals may be greater than needed for our region and are working with Bayer Crop Science to better understand how “real” these concerns are. Regardless always follow the label and if data is generated to reduce rotational interval then we will let you know immediately.

Apply PRE right after seeding! POST OVERTOP Atrazine + Prowl (early POST through 12”) Atrazine + Laudis (data looks great) Callisto and Impact also labeled…less tolerance in our research.

Plowing Destroys the Herbicide Layer If you plow, products like Dual Magnum, Prowl and/or Atrazine applied after plowing would be beneficial.

Roundup WMAX On Sweet Corn Emergence through 8 leaf collars or 30” whichever comes first. One application of WMAX at 32 oz/A + atrazine prior to 12 inch corn Two applications of WMAX at 22 oz/A if avoiding atrazine for carryover concern. Max use rate 44 oz/A, don’t exceed 4.1 qt/A. 10 d between application, 30 d PHI Read slide

Nutsedge in Sweet Corn RR System: Sequential applications of Roundup and Sandea (top notch) Conventional Corn: Sandea 0.67 oz/A from spike through layby. “Injury is responsibility of grower”. We also need to discuss nutsedge. Vegetable growers should definitely take the opportunity to control nutsedge in sweet corn since it is so hard to control in other vegetable crops. In Roundup Ready cotton sequential applications of Roundup and Sandea is best. In conventional sweet corn, Sandea plus surfactant is very good.
