Atoms Chapter 2, Section 1.
The Atom. Matter Is anything that has weight and takes up space. Is anything that has weight and takes up space. All matter is made of atoms. All matter.
Atom, Ion, or Isotope?. Atoms Atoms are neutral Protons = Electrons There are special kinds of atoms.... IonsIsotopes.
Atomic Structure: Isotopes and Ions. Isotopes  The number of protons for a given atom never changes.  The number of neutrons can change.  Two atoms.
Section 2: Exploring the Periodic Table
 The atoms of all elements are made up of a central nucleus with orbiting electrons. ◦ A nucleus is made up of positively charged PROTONS and neutral.
Ionic BONDING. Noble Gases Have complete outer shells that cannot accept anymore electrons Unreactive Will not combine (form bonds) with any other.
4 – Investigate and describe the compounds formed by bonding elements. 3 – Describe why certain elements bond with others. 2 – Use the periodic table.
What is the bonding in metals like? The atoms in metals are closely packed and regularly arranged.
Metallic Bonding This is the type of bonding found in metals.
Structure of an Atom. The Three subatomic particles of an atom: Proton Neutron Electron.
IONS. Neutral Atoms: Review Neutral Atoms have the same number of PROTONS and ELECTRONS. Protons have a POSITIVE charge. + Electrons have a NEGATIVE charge.
What are ionic bonds? Section 15-5.
- Protons - positive charge - same mass as neutrons - Neutrons - no electrical charge - same mass as protons - Electrons - negative charge - very tiny.
Ions When atoms lose or gain electrons. Proton = + charge Neutron = neutral charge Electron = - charge Structure of an Atom.
ATOMS, IONS AND ISOTOPES…OH, MY!. ATOMS Smallest part of matter Made of proton (+) Neutron (neutral/0) Electron (-)
IONIC BONDING. HOW DOES IT WORK? Ionic bonding takes place between metals and non-metals Metal atoms try to attain noble gas strucure (full outer shells)
Atoms with a charge. Ion: any atom that has a net electric charge; not neutral If the atom is not neutral, then there must be a different number of protons.
Valence electrons Valence electrons are those electrons that are lost or gained when elements combine.
Section 2 Protons, neutrons, and electrons- how atoms differ
The Atomic Theory The smallest particle of an element that can enter into chemical change. 2. Building block of all matter. 3. Consists of a central nucleus.

Presentation transcript:

+ + - If it loses an electron the atom now has one too many protons in the nucleus. The atom now has a positive charge and is called an ION. This happens in solid metals! - - A normal single metal atom has the same numbers of protons (in the nucleus) as electrons in orbit. The atom is NEUTRAL

The free electrons can move!! + - + - + - + - The free electrons can move!! In a metal electrons are the only carriers of electricity In a solid piece of metal POSITIVE IONS are in a FIXED LATTICE. The cannot move in bulk!!!
