What is research Research is a process to discover new knowledge by systematically studying materials and sources in order to establish facts and draw your own conclusions.

Basic Research Process Choose a topic Create a search strategy Find Information/Sources Read Closely Summarize, Paraphrase and Quote key information Synthesize and Evaluate information Cite Your Sources

Close Reading Instructions Before Reading: Number paragraphs on each page. Read headlines/headings, subheadings, charts, etc. to get a sense of what the text is about. Turn them into research questions. Separate reading into chunks by headings or sections 2-3 paragraphs long. Financial aid is money for educational expenses for college or career school. Grants do not have to be repaid (they are often called “gift aid”). Loans have to be repaid with interest. Work-study is money earned by the student at a job (often on campus) that helps the student pay his or her educational expenses. This money does not have to be repaid and is not taken into account in assessing a student’s eligibility for financial aid the following year. Scholarships are funds that do not have to be repaid. Scholarships are usually based on academic merit but can be based on a student’s interests, hobbies, religion, ethnicity, and/or financial need.

Mindsets for Success Divide into 7 groups Use the close reading strategy and annotate important or questionable ideas. Circle and define challenging vocabulary. Summarize the section in you own words Evaluate: Write a statement agreeing or disagreeing with the ideas in your section.

Group – Mindsets for success Choose a quote from the article. Decide whether you agree or disagree with the quote. Prepare a statement to present to the class explaining your decision.
